Meknes is Morocco's most underrated imperial city — a UNESCO World Heritage medina with far fewer tourists than Fez or Marrakech, yet extraordinary monuments. Sultan Moulay Ismail built it as a rival to Versailles in the 17th century, leaving behind monumental city walls, the magnificent Bab Mansour gate, and his own mausoleum.
Meknes is also the gateway to the Roman ruins of Volubilis (30km away) — the best-preserved Roman site in North Africa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The combination of Meknes + Volubilis + nearby Moulay Idriss village makes for one of Morocco's most rewarding day-trip combinations.

Meknes has a train station with direct connections to Casablanca (2.5hrs), Rabat (2hrs), and Fez (45min). No direct flights. Grand taxis from Fez take 1hr. The medina is 15–20 min walk from the train station.
Spring (Mar–May) and autumn (Sep–Oct) are ideal. Summers are hot (35°C+) but the medina provides shade. Winters are cool and quiet — the city is very manageable without summer crowds.
Hire a grand taxi for the Volubilis + Moulay Idriss combination (~200 MAD for the day). Visit Volubilis at opening time (8am) for the best light and fewer tourists. Meknes itself needs 1 full day minimum.
